CREATIVE COMMUNITIES PROJECT
Planning
: The main goal of the South Carolina Arts Commission (SCAC) is to help more South Carolina artists in all disciplines gain the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to build satisfying, sustainable lives as artists. In 2007, understanding that artistic creativity alone is not enough to drive a system that brings artists’ products to the public and markets that make their work economically sustainable, SCAC embarked on a planning process that engaged a diverse cross-section of artists and other arts stakeholders to identify common key issues and opportunities for South Carolina artists. The planning process began with a statewide, open-call convening of artists and other individuals who helped inform a discussion about issues facing South Carolina artists. Upon completion of the convening, SCAC had a list of challenges that needed direct attention, and around which they will build the programs to: support artists’ professional development; facilitate networks and information sharing; and provide direct support to individual artists.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA ARTS COMMISSION
The South Carolina Arts Commission is an autonomous state agency created by an act of the state legislature in 1967. Its mission is to build a thriving arts environment for the benefit of all South Carolinians. For 40 years, the agency has worked to make it possible for every citizen in the state to enjoy and benefit from the arts. The Commission's programs and activities fall into three major domains of public participation and service: artist development; arts education; and community arts development.
