Creative Communities Projects

Fund for Artists: The San Francisco Foundation (TSFF) and the East Bay Community Foundation (EBCF) continue the work of this partnership to increase funding for individual artists in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo counties through donor development, artist development, research, and cultural networking strategies. From the beginning the partnership reached beyond their respective institutional and geographic boundaries to address the systematic and historic imbalances of resources for artists in the Bay Area. The Fund for Artists supports the endeavors of individual artists through commissions, artists' residencies, awards, advocacy, workshops, promotional instruction, and networking support. TSSF and EBCF continue their successful re-granting and matching commission grants programs, as well as their donor development efforts for individual artists and arts organizations. Artist recipients of winning projects are a diverse representation of communities of color.

Cultural Corridor: In collaboration with the cities of Berkeley, Emeryville, Oakland, and Richmond, the San Francisco Bay Area partnership will form the East Bay Cultural Corridor to establish an interactive online map that includes locations and contact information of individual artists and arts organizations, as well as web-based marketing, box office, and individual donor development tools. This online regional arts network will continue to increase the visibility of East Bay artists and provide opportunities for collaboration and shared resources.

Research: A psychographic donor study will be developed to gain a better understanding of the giving trends and sustainable motivations of diverse arts donors. In addition, an update of the 2004 study, Information for Artists, will be conducted by Joan Jeffries. Resulting data will provide information about artistic practices, income, changes in demographics, training, healthcare, and other issues.

Workshops and Events: The partnership plans and hosts educational forums focused on the challenges facing artists and the potential for donors to make meaningful contributions to their work. In 2007, EBCF collaborated with TSFF to host a series of entrepreneurial workshops for 25 artists. The workshops were provided by the Center for Cultural Innovation (CCI) and based on CCI’s Business of Art entrepreneurial seminars.

Arts Teacher Fellowships: Based on a similar program offered by the Surdna Foundation, the three Bay Area foundations have established the Fund for Artists Initiative Arts Teacher Fellowships (FFAATF). The Fellowships support the artistic revitalization of outstanding arts teachers in Bay Area middle and high schools. Through FFAATF, fellows design individualized courses of study that foster their own creative work and the opportunity to interact with other professional artists in their fields. In addition to an annual monetary award, a complementary grant is given to each fellow's respective school. Fellows are expected to work with schools to implement post-fellowship plans in the classroom, and submit a report on the impact of the fellowship.
