In 2005 the Department of Cultural Affairs launched this website (“created by artists, for artists”) as a centralized location for artist community-driven content. Twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week, the site acts as a gateway connecting Chicago artists with comprehensive arts resources and opportunities for professional practice, while serving as a vehicle for promotion for artists.
CAR also offers Square Feet Chicago, an extensive online guide for artists and arts organizations interested in buying and leasing space in Chicago. In complement to this in-depth resource, CAR maintains a database of links and directories to professional services, consultants, facilities, and fabricators, as well as articles on health care and other materials for artists. Based on its success and the expressed interest from Creative Communities partners, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs plans to syndicate CAR, offering localized versions of the site to organizations serving artists in the LINC network and beyond.
The Chicago Departments of Cultural Affairs (DCA) was established as a municipal department in 1984 to promote the arts, make them accessible to the widest possible audience, and market the city’s abundant and diverse cultural resources and attractions to a worldwide audience. The department supports artists, cultural institutions and community organizations through grants, workshops, the Chicago Artists’ Resource (CAR) website and by creating myriad opportunities to showcase their work.
