Creative Communities Project

ArtHome:

ArtHome seeks to bridge the gap that “arts-only” solutions for space have overlooked in the potential for artists to leverage existing asset-building and education programs regarding housing. In 2008, ArtHome established a resource group of citywide and neighborhood organizations in New York City involved in counseling and research activities. This group makes available new opportunities for accessing homeownership and foreclosure prevention training and illuminates how home-buying and foreclosure prevention services programs can intersect with low-income artists in New York City. During the first phase of the project, ArtHome will work with the New York Mortgage Coalition to develop several publications including: a resource of existing local services; a how-to guide for navigating entities such as the Federal Housing Administration; and a guide to existing programs in New York City. During the second phase, they will implement a strategy to include artists and independent workers in local New York City home-buying and foreclosure prevention programs.

About ArtHome, a project of the Pratt Center for Community Development

ArtHome helps artists build assets and equity through educating artists about financial literacy and home-ownership. By partnering with key community organizations and stakeholders, ArtHome is committed to strengthening the cultural vitality indigenous to neighborhoods. ArtHome works to increase opportunities for cross-sector partnerships, and to grow the resources, not just of artists, but also of peer community development organizations, neighborhoods, and neighbors. In partnership with the Pratt Center for Community Development, ArtHome addresses the lack of affordable housing, with a particular focus on homeownership opportunities for low-income artists in New York City.
