Creative Communities

Artists are fundamental to our cultural heritage. Despite ample evidence of the essential social and economic benefits they provide to communities in which they live and work, American artists are typically undervalued, and suffer from both a lack of resources and poor public perception of their many contributions. LINC addresses these issues through the work of its Creative Communities program, which is a nationwide network of organizations working to improve local and regional conditions for artists. The program promotes best-practices with respect to artist space, health insurance, training and professional development, demand and markets, and direct support and validation. In addition to financial investment, the Creative Communities program places a high value on information-sharing and knowledge-building. Each project is a collaboration of arts organizations and local partners that take a place-based approach to their work, underscored by the core value of representing and elevating the full diversity of disciplines and cultures in their community. Our goal is to leverage the resulting span of approaches to create successful working models for other communities around the country.
