Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit

The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) will receive $100,000 over two years to transform its vacant outdoor space into an inviting landscape for both public artwork and community engagement. Founded in 2006 in a former auto dealership, MOCAD is the region's first museum dedicated solely to contemporary art and culture. Its rotation of exhibitions and temporary projects has created a dynamic art space with a wide range of programming designed to spark dialogue among its diverse patrons. With support from the Space for Change program, MOCAD will develop its response to its neighborhood's plan for a Midtown Loop greenway and the city's overall plans for urban renewal. MOCAD is considering various strategies for leveraging the space surrounding its building to become a pedestrian-friendly green space that unites the museum with the 1.8 mile greenway connecting Midtown to the Detroit River. MOCAD further envisions activating its exterior space as a sculpture park and/or as kind of ever-changing canvas for public projects that are the result of artist and community collaborations.
