Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana

Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA), a contemporary San Jose arts organization grounded in the Chicano/Latino experience, will receive $100,000 over two years as it prepares to convert the entire building it now partially occupies into a permanent home, a plan supported by the Redevelopment Agency of the City of San Jose. This expansion will ensure that artists of color retain their stake in the community even as more mainstream arts groups settle in, and that MACLA will continue to spur the revitalization of its downtown corridor. MACLA's vision for the renovated facility includes gallery spaces, a re-designed black-box theater, administrative and commercial space, classrooms, studios and 20 affordable artist live/work lofts. The result would be MACLA's greater ability to showcase new art that fosters dialogue and mutual understanding among diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups, and a sustained commitment to youth art education.
