Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center

Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center of San Pablo will receive $100,000 over two years to support plans to develop a larger facility, having outgrown its modest storefront location. Founded by local artists in response to social unrest that developed among Latino youth during the 1990's, Los Cenzontles uses art, music, dance and culture to foster ethnic pride and identity. It is a leader in the production, performance and instruction of Mexican arts, and an economic engine in the working class community where it is located. Larger quarters will allow Los Cenzontles to expand its programming while retaining its role as a zócalo – a central community gathering space. The organization envisions a new theater in its building that will provide a vibrant space for active, community engagement and the organization's continued function as a safe haven and intergenerational outlet for the creativity of its students and their families.
