A diverse group of cultural professionals, real estate experts, community development practitioners, asset builders, scholars, and philanthropists gathered in New Orleans, LA, for LINC’s 2nd annual Space for Change conference. The agenda began on Sunday with a tour of New Orleans guided by members of Central City Renaissance Alliance, and culminated in a group dinner and discussion. Monday’s main event commenced at the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) New Orleans with a keynote address by Rebuild Foundation founder and artist, Theaster Gates, entitled “Buildings and Belief: Reimagining Development and Contemporary Practice.” During the second half of the day, participants attended working sessions led by Artist Space Development field experts regarding the areas of evaluation, capital development, financial assessment, and community revitalization. The day’s events concluded with a reception at the CAC New Orleans. View Photos.
Throughout the working sessions, the cultivation of relationships for potential collaboration and long-term knowledge exchange was emphasized. This emphasis was carried through to the concluding discussion groups on Tuesday, held at Ashé Cultural Center, which were designed to facilitate peer problem-solving for challenges related to developing and sustaining dynamic art spaces. The final session of the convening featured a performance by Bamboula 2000, and a plenary session by Judilee Reed & Risë Wilson. View Photos.
Through this convening, LINC sought to leverage leadership and field expertise toward the goal of fostering multiple points of contact to yield meaningful relationships and lasting results.
